This page is for your group to summarize the major takeaways from our in-class activities held throughout the semester. The intent is to list and summarize key points you do not want to forget as we move forward to student teaching and beyond.
Be specific to what you learned and general to the major points that stick with you. Put your group's responses here.
-The biggest thing I remember from our class activities is the need for variety. All of the students in the class always commented that there was a need for variety to keep the classes interesting. We can definitely see that through the variation in Fischetti’s methods of class instruction. -As teachers we will face the dilemma of adjusting our classrooms to help students with physical disabilities, whether temporary or permanent. We must allow room for students to move around comfortably if they are in wheelchairs. The class exercise two weeks ago showed the difficulty of moving around the classroom. -Technology is imperative to the classroom. We as future teachers must be prepared to keep our students interested in a 21st century and the gateway for this is technology. We must use devices such as the quiz remotes and IPod Touch tools. -Students and teachers alike are part of a global community. We have to demonstrate to our students the importance of global competition and show them how to help out our fellow, GLOBAL neighbors. This was demonstrated through the www.freerice.org and the world population clock. - We must reach all students. As a history major we must remember that history is not only about what the White man did and there are students from varied ethnicities in the classes that want to hear their histories. Therefore, it is imperative to reach all students. This was demonstrated by the African slave ships and the crowding of the class into the center of the room to give it a somewhat real effect
- Give students adequate time to answer questions when you actually ask them a question. Fischetti used the 10 second rule to allow enough time for students to think and formulate questions or answers.
- Exit cards are an excellent tool to use in the classroom. This gives a good wrap up for the students and is a perfect assessment tool for teachers to learn whether or not they are reaching all of the students and where they can improve.
- Do not let the bell dismiss the class. Keep students actively involved for the entire class period with varied instruction and fun activities to keep learning progressing extensively.
- Eye contact is imperative in the classroom. Eye contact shows our students that we care and we are involved with the students on a one-to-one basis making them feel extremely important.
- Classroom management structure. Setting up the classroom for active involvement, as well as ease of instruction and annoyances from students.
- Showing the relevance of what is learned in class to the real world. An example of this was the posting of the Delpit book review on www.barnesandnobles.com. This also demonstrated the value of every student's opinion.
-Relationship building is important for all students and teachers. When we build a personal relationship with each student we give them a reason to trust us and to want to participate in the classroom.
